Because a lot of fandoms have avoided ff.net like the plague, especially after the ban on NC-17. However, it's still an interesting statistical survey.
I think people prefer fandoms set in other worlds -- sci-fi, fantasy, etc., because they offer a wider range of possibilities. A lot of sitcoms, for example, are supposed to (note: *supposed* to) reflect so-called typical life, and who wants to spend time fantasizing and writing about that? You might laugh at its absurdities while watching the sitcom itself, but it doesn't provide the "escape" from RL that seems to jump-start fandoms.
