Madeline shifted in her chair, her eyes riveted to Operations' as the conference call ended. George had been very clear. Nikita was to be released from Section immediately with no debriefing or retraining. Unprecedented in the history of the Section she knew.
Operations gaze followed her as she rose, picked up her spray bottle, and began to visit each orchid in the room. He thought she looked especially lovely today, but kept his thoughts to himself. The delicate balance in the room was not to be upset.
Madeline stopped at a particular orchid that seemed to be frailer than the rest. She set the bottle down and picked up a tiny scissors. Examining the tip of a leaf, she carefully excised the yellowish spot from it, leaving it slightly wounded, but nevertheless, on its way to a healthier existence.
"They're up to something. I just know it."
"Yes. But look at it this way. We're finally rid of a thorn that's been in our side since the day she arrived. Michael will have no more excuses. We'll be able to devote our time and resources to things that deserve them."
She smiled as their eyes reconnected.
"I believe that's cause for celebration. Will you dine with me tonight?"
Madeline's head tilted slightly as she nodded her assent.
"Yes. Celebration."
But she would get to the bottom of this, George or no George.
