...read transcripts, that is. And rewatch certain episodes to check things I'm unsure of, because I've learned not to rely on (a) my memory and (b) other people's fics. *g*

Apart from those people who watched the show from the very beginning and pretty much started writing fic straight away, we were all newbie writers at one point. I certainly was, at any rate. I'd only seen the first half of S1 when I discovered the online fandom and started reading fan fiction. We poor kiddies down here in Australia were very deprived, you see. *g* The US fans were five episodes into S3 by that stage, so a lot of the stories I was reading dealt with episodes and developments I'd never seen. It was therefore impossible to tell the difference between fanon and canon until I read the actual episode transcripts, and it was only after I'd snaffled S3 and half of S4 from a tape fairy that I wrote my first story. Even then, I mucked up quite a few little details from "Into the Looking Glass" because I hadn't watched it enough. To this day, though, I'm blaming the fact that the copy of the copy of the copy of the tape wasn't entirely clear. *vbeg*

If I write, I always read though the whole transcript as well as watching an episode if my story deals with it in any way. Because it's been a long time since all I did was live and breathe LFN, and sometimes important little details can be lost in the sands of time.

We've had a few fanon/canon threads on this board over the years and they're always interesting - perhaps we should have another one? *g*
