I like imperfect characters. Actually, Swati, your description of 'Grudging Leader' fits.
Someone who would prefer to do what they do without the limelight. Who isn't always certain that their decisions are correct. Who might have a dubious moral history in one way or another but has somehow found a way to deal with it.
I guess I like my characters to have a past that hurts but has somehow made them stronger. A view of the world that to them, has been thought through and which they staunchly defend, but may at some point come crashing down around their ears.
All in all, a strength brought about about a difficult history -- steel forged by fire, as it were (with whatever inherent flaws! ;)
And no...I don't "identify" with them as such. Just enjoy watching as a spectator.
