From the little I know biomass seems appropriate for another time & (smaller) space - 200 years out or 200 years prior (to coal, then oil and gas). if we're going to reclaim land and let it heal and skim off some fiber here and there - great. but with today's industrial mentality and population burden it appears it may just be another way of fooling ourselves that we're doing something useful and allow the industrial charlatans to co-opt yet another sincere and meaningful avenue to sustainability by making things worse as referenced by the first part of pa's post.

from what I gathered in my peak oil readings the so-called energy crop is another illusion just based on the fact that it's production is oil/gas dependent, as would be it's distribution - it's a net loss in calories and still requires emissions for the above stated reasons.

Bottom line - top soil loss and soil depletion problems will not be solved by trying to extract more and more from them in our attempt to continue the habits engendered by the petro-epoch.

I'm probably wrong but I think cows release methane and are "responsible" for a large share of the global "expiration." But it's all a gas-oily cycle - at least for the petroleum grain/corn fed de-vine bo-vines.
