but that doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to research them. i'm surprised to hear you react to the Biomass thread with such a naysayer's pooh-pooh-fing, pjk. i understand the urge to stand at the sidelines and yell at the people rowing the boat "you're rowing upstream! you'll never make it!" but listen man...you of all people should know that the waterfall downstream don't look like a good alternative.

Hybrid cars pose a host of problems that are actually laughable in some ways. all the people feeling so good about participating in the movement. as if the are actually part of something good. as if they are Activists!

1. they cost more to buy
2. they can cost more to run according to a lot of data
3. electricity has to come from somewhere...probably coal burning in some pristine desert that some guy in west virginia got black lung or worse digging out
4. the impact on fossil fuel consumption is not even measurable
5. they contribute to the never-ending cycle of the great Car Culture which is a huge perceptual problem
6. more emphasis on driving means more roads means more global warming due to loss of vegetative habitat
7. more roads leads to more natural disasters as in california where roads are blamed for flooding due to forced run-off into unnatural flood patterns and less green to absorb
8. more roads leads to.........[fill-in the blank] [where does that asphalt come from and go to?]
9. in some places, your hybrid will get you in the car-pool lane driving alone!!!!!!!!!!!!! you do the math..6 hybrid vehicles with one driver or 1 SUV with 5 passengers times a billion worldwide? congestion anyone?
10. and we get tax incentives for this????
11. where do we dispose of ten million batteries the size of a suitcase in five years?
12. [i could go on]

let's just kill ourselves and get it over with, right?

my point to anyone listening and i hope you are pjk is that while i don't disregard or dismiss your points, i do agree with krz and pa when they suggest that through all the imperfections of progress, we are going somewhere. i don't where it is and it's not always pretty but it's amazing and dynamic and unpredictable and mysterious.

i am fascinated by travelling in a powered vehicle safely, at good speed and with little negative impact on my external world. i hope in my lifetime i own a machine that can do that.

until that time comes i will only encourage the efforts and hope for the best for biomass, geothermal, solar, electric, wind and thought.

my wish is for optimism in the darkest times and innovation through the direst.
