Subject: memories

I lived in Speke from being a 6yr old till i got married in 1965 and like most people from there have only happy memories of the place. I went to St Christophers infant/junior schools also to All Hallows being one of the first pupils to to attend both the junior and senior schools on the day they first openened. I can remember when the junior school was held in an annex by the infant school also a teacher called Mr Macabe teaching there as he lived near me in Conleach at the time.I remember playing on the field (which is now the shopping parade) after school and feeling safe also the several walks we had each year around the streets eg Whitsun.we lived also prior to Conleach in East millwood road and after Conleach in Lovell Way Does any one remember the youth club being held in St Christophers? or the youth dancers at Comp on Central Ave also the cake van that use to come around on a Satureday night and if i remember there was also a mobile sweet van about the size a a morris minor van. may I say that those memories can never be erased no matter how much Speke may change

I too went to St Christopher's in fact I lived on Tarbock Road exactly opposite the school - my Mum always used to keep an eye on the school to make sure no-one got up to mischief in the evenings. I remember Mr McCabe, in fact his daughter Anna was in school with me. Mr Morgan was the head of the juniors and Miss Richards head of the infants. I had a really good childhood in Speke and always felt safe. Most people took pride in their houses and had really nice gardens. I was really surprised to hear on the radio last year that it is among the most socially deprived places in the country.

I remember Mr McCabe from St Christophers.
He only had one leg.He was fighter pilot during war.
I sat next to his son Paul in class.

I remember Mr McCabe, my brother Brian had him for 3 years straight because no other teacher would have him, his classroom was next to the church. I had Miss Oakley and remember her giving me 6 of the best, my oldest brother Peter was a prefect and sent me to her, I aso went to All Hallows but then we emigrated to Australia and we are still here it has been a great life but l still think the best times were growing up in Speke, Oggy Shore Speke Hall and Peter used to take us to the airport to see the planes, and l will always remember when the Fair came every year down near Western Ave we were only allowed to listen to classical and opera music at home so l enjoyed the music there. I still play that music today

Mr McCabe was my Father-in Law. He was a real Gentleman. He was very kind to me in my younger days whenI was bringing up my three children. He always made them laugh with his one leg.
