Subject: LINNER ROAD 1942/57

I was 8 years old when we moved from norris green to 78 Linner Road in Speke.and started my new school at St Francis in Garston as there was no local schools (RC)in those days so i had a free bus pass and caught the 77 bus in Western Ave to Garston and back , Western Ave was the terminus then for the 77 80 81 and the crosville that came from Warrington then a bit later we had the 89 to St Helens. But it was the good times as a kid that i loved the best home from school grab a jam butty and get out with the lads and kick hell out out off a tennis ball playing footy in the street or cricket the wicket being the lamp post.
The days i talking about there were no houses built further up than Lovel Road and half of them where what we called then half houses (Bungalows now)there was no Stapleton Ave that was all trees ect!. Loads of wild life all around were the Ford factory is now we had the Labrador woods jezz you could get lost in them it was like a jungle.making a rope swing from the branch of a nice big oak.just befor we got there ,there was a pit we called the 15 foot loads of us in the summer (and they were summers then)used to skinny dip in there all lads of course lol sadly one of the lads drowned in it and for a long while we all stayed away he was a youhg amature boxer called Morris lived on Damwood Road other times as ppl have said we would walk over to the table bridge and collect train numbers them banks by the railway were teeming with Rabbits we had fun catching them
And we all had a good collection of birds eggs evev an ostrich egg one of the lads brothers brought back from abroad, and then in 1950 child hood finished and working life began. real good times to remember, oh i forgot the tanks we used to watch that were built in Milners (the standards factory ), going through there paces up and down the tank traps then later the German pow's filling them inand the planes built at rootes (the old dunlop factory)and take of and land at the old speke airport, thats it folks

Hi Ted.
I was born in Garston in 1942, then moved to 116 Lovel road 6 years later, I have all the same memories as you, just supper times then, with no worries, I married at All Saints church, in 1966, then moved to Toronto Canada.

Hope you reply.

Yours Truly Tom Dowker.
