Subject: Speke 1960 - 1970

Having stumbled on the website whilst looking on google for historic images of Speke, I was amazed to find out how many people posted comments which I can relate to.

I was born in 1954 at home in Hale Drive, and lived in Speke until 1973.

I remember the old cottage on the main road which was a sweet shop where the H1 crosville bus used to pass. The woods were opposite where I lived, played lots of sports especially in the summer when the weather always seemed to be hot. Me and my mates spent lots of hours in Austin Rawlinson Baths, I remember the shops in Western Avenue, Jack Allen the newsagents, the Dunnes had the chippy, a barbers shop and hardware shop were my parents would buy paraffin for our heater. Lots and lots of great memories. My friends were Tom Parry, Graham Crompton, Brian Johnson, Ian & Keith Marin, Kevin Keller, the Hamiltons from Western Avenue, the O'Shaunessys from Lovel Road to name but a few.

We also hung around with some girls such as Helen Grieve (my childhood sweetheart ), Joan Tann and Lynn all from Damwood Road.

I also remember the Bimpsons from Hale Drive.

Ah Wendy Thompson. I was a mate of your brother Stuart, and I remember your brothers as well. Your mum and dad used to go out every Saturday night to a social club just around the corner from your house. Stuart used to invite me around to get up to some high jinx like garden creeping in peoples back gardens. He once got caught in someones garden and told the guy her was looking for his tortoise ! Also remember you getting all dolled up on a Saturday to go out with your friends and Stuart used to torment you. Great days and laughs
