Subject: Speke WWII Veterans

Speke of the 1960s and 70s was full of WWII Veterans. The Speke British Legion was were they all used to gather. Then they would usually find their way into the Honky Tonk. One was Johnny Airborne. I didn't ever learn Johnny's real surname. He served in the Parachute Regiment and fought at Arnhem, the battle made famous in the film 'A bridge too far'. There was also an old Irish soldier, I think his name was Jimmy Reid, and I think one of them was called Cyril Thompson who served in Burma. There was quite a few of them.

Jock Jordan, Head of Speke Comprehensive Lower School, was himself a veteran, and I think Mr Roddy was as well.

Speke had a couple of Normandy Veterans living in Oldbridge Road up until 2014. Bobby Binks, ex-Royal Marine, who worked in Ford's: and the now famous first wave D-Day lander George Bush.

Funny now to think you were living in the midst of these men who are now so celebrated. It was a shame they all weren't appreciated in their time.
