Subject: Convince me.

Hey,
Would someone please convince me or tell me why Foxfire is a better browser than Microsoft. And don't play the "corporate whore" card. I don't buy it.

[> firefox! 10 reasons its better than IE -- steven, 19:32:09 10/14/04 Thu

here is a list:

1. tabbed browsing. multiple pages. one window. thus, have pages you want to look at load in background while finishing reading the first thing.

2. extensions. firefox comes very streamlined. want more features? download them, they are called extensions. example: mouse gestures. move mouse in a patten while holding down right mouse button, execute different commands. new window, new tab, close tab, etc.

3. no auto software install. IE allows the automatic install of certain pieces of software. firefox will always ask.

4. downloads window. start a download, the little window showing the download progress pops up. close that window in IE, the download stops. close that window in firefox, the download continues. reopen the download window to see it's progress. when it's done, a notification pops up in the lower right hand corner if the download window is closed.

got a download running and the download window closed? and then try to close the browser? download cancels right? wrong! firefox warns you that you have a download currently active and closing the browser will cancel it. want to close firefox anyway? open the downloads window. then close the browser, and the download continues on its way. excellent. (and yes, if the downloads window is the only firefox thing open, it will warn you before closing it if there is one or more downloads active)

5. address bar doesn't change. do you hate it when typing in a new address in IE and the text suddenly changes and you have to type it again? i do. that's why i like that firefox doesn't do that.

6. themes. anyone that likes to make the browser look like they want it to. similar to skins, and installed the same way as extensions.

7. bookmark keywords. type a single letter to jump to a page. for example, i type a "b" into my address bar, and it loads one of my bookmarks.

8. foxy-tunes. a really cool extension that allows you to control any music program from the bottom of the browser.

9. never see the "runtime error: would you like to debug" message. which is a REALLY annoying feature in IE.

10. built in pop-up stopper. no additional software. no mouse cursor flickering, no annoying sounds. just automatic. (and of course, can be customized to suit your liking)

well there you have it. ten of the many reasons firefox is better than IE. hope this helps.

So it seems that you have a strong opinion on the subject. which is cool, i might have to try it out, or then again maybe this is just a vast conpiracy for firefox to secretly steal all your personal information. be wary!

Love
Josh

[> another reason i just found -- steven, 19:58:49 10/14/04 Thu

well, not too long ago i wrote the ten reasons why firefox is better than IE. i just found another one. i would have included this one, but didn't know about it. here goes.

i'm casually browsing the internet, when a little pop up shows up in the corner of firefox saying "new updates are avaliable". now, i expected it to be for firefox because i know that firefox automatically updates itself now. (after it asks you for permission) however, these updates were for the themes/extensions i have installed. i didn't even know it checked for those! awesome!
