Hi...I have a little problem that I worry about every now and then, and it's kinda long. Well I live in a small city, and there's only about 3 or 4 dance studios in our city. I go to one of them, and I love it...I've been going there since I was 3 years old, and I'm now 12 (going on 13) so this will be my 10th year. It's so special to me. I've always kind of considered myself a good dancer. We have 2 dance teams, one for 10th-12th graders, and one for 7th-9th graders. This year I got to try out and I made it. I was really happy. Well anyways, a lot of my friends to this other dance studio. I went to their recital a few months ago. It was pretty good, and I was really impressed with their dance team. At their studio anyone of any age can try out for it...and they are really good. Then just a couple months ago I went to my cousins dance recital. They live a couple hours away in a pretty big city. Their recital was so amazing!!! There were kids probably younger than me that could have made our dance team or the dance team of the other studio in our city. Two of my cousins, 12 and 13, are so great at dance. I admire them so much!! After watching them, I wondered how I considered myself a good dancer. After that, I started to kind of doubt our studio. I mean I love it, but compared to others we seem to not be that good. And there's nothing I can do about it. I cant change studios, I love all the staff and other kids going there, its like home to me...and there's hardly any others in our town anyway. I would definitely hate going to the other studio because the owner (that is also one of the teachers) is so rude...and the whole dance studio is just not as personal as ours....of course ours is much smaller so we get to know everyone and stuff like that. Anyway after awhile I started to get my confidence back. I am taking 5 dance classes this year, instead of the usual 2. I stretch every single night for at least an hour and I do 300 crunches every single night. I am so determined to do great at dancing. But I still am doubting it a little because I met this one girl who is 10 years old and she's already on pointe. That doesnt seem to be so uncommon now, and I know I might not go on pointe until I'm in 8th, 9th, or 10th grade! (Our teachers say that if you go on pointe too early, it can cause foot injuries later, and it can be very bad for your feet and toes if you go on too early, so they wait until our feet are really strong) Anway, my point is, I thought our dance studio was really great and stuff, but I realized compared to everyone else, we're not that competitive, and we dont seem to be so concerned with putting 10 year olds on pointe. What I mean is we (by we, i guess I mean the teachers) dont seem to be that concerned with introducing so much technique in the early years of dance. And now I just wish that in the first place I had lived in a bigger city where the studios were more competitive and they taught the girls more complex stuff earlier...so the dancers got better, earlier. So I am just confused. I love dance SO much, and I would never leave my dance studio. I just don't know what to do. If anyone has any advice at all, I would really appreciate it!!!! Thank you so much.
