DIVINA Francine Manglona Dela Cruz is 2004 Miss Teen CNMI.
Dela Cruz, 16, will be the islands’ representative to the Miss Antillas International which will be held on May 18 in Caracas, Venezuela.
She broke into tears after her name was called out by Patricia Coleman, the pageant’s mistress of ceremony, at the end of the glittering coronation on Saturday afternoon at the Hyatt Regency’s SandCastle.
Dela Cruz succeeds Remylyn Julene Guerrero, who last year was second runner-up in the Miss Antillas International pageant in Venezuela.
Named 1st runner-up on Saturday was Jocelyn Santos Castro, 16, a 12th grader of Kagman High School.
Tinian’s Juliette Marie Manglona Teregeyo was 2nd runner-up. The 16-year-old is an 11th grader of Tinian High School.
An 11th grader at Marianas High School, Dela Cruz also won four of the pageant’s seven special awards — Miss Sweetheart, Best in National Costume, Best in Sports Wear and Best in Evening Gown.
Jerbeth Mendiola de Leon was voted Miss Photogenic. She is also an 11th grader at MHS.
Another MHS student, Chanel Genevieve Deleon Guerrero Cabrera, was voted Miss Congeniality, while Teregeyo’s dramatic interpretation on domestic violence won the judges’ nod for Best in Talent.
Variety later learned that there was a tie for the Best in Talent award between Teregeyo and Dela Cruz, who sang Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.”
The judges had to vote to break the tie.
Veteran choreographer Ernie Molina and Ana Glushko, the artistic director of Glushko’s Academy of Arts, produced and directed the three-hour pageant.
Q&A
The judges were 2003 Miss NMI Universe/World Kimberly Reyes, Saipan Chamber of Commerce executive director Carlene Reyes-Tenorio, Rayna Hudson of the Women’s Affairs Office, the Hyatt Regency Saipan’s Josephine Mesta, and Jennifer San Nicholas of Tinian High School.
Ernst & Young auditor Romel Paras and Christoher Lube were the official tabulators.
Dela Cruz was asked what “legacy she will leave and what advice to give teenagers who want to join the pageant.”
Dela Cruz said Miss Teen CNMI is a “great opportunity” and part of the “many obstacles in life...that challenge and strengthen you and help you in life.”
Castro was asked what is the “biggest problem” facing women.
“Teen pregnancy.... Teen pregnancy jeopardizes (our) future and (the) many opportunities out there,” Castro said. “I will help...them make right decisions in the future.”
Teregeyo was asked to “identify the many issues” facing women and how can she address them if crowned Miss Teen 2004.
“Teen pregnancy. I can address it by working with (various)...prevention programs. I am going to use my crown to put out prevention programs and raise confidence, self-love and self-respect (among women),” she said.
