Sheila,
I understand your confusion, as the play follows a rather complex time line. Anyway, I will say that it's important to understand that the entire play is Gallimard looking back on the events that lead to his position in the opening scene. He is simply recollecting his past from his prison cell, but the play is still confusing only when reading it simply because there are various chronological events that overlap each other and seem to intermingle at once. Hopefully this helps a little, and after the quiz tommorow, we will view a clip from M Butterfly, so hopefully that will alleviate some of your confusion.
