Well, of course. He needed a new set of photo ops and footage to be used in the upcoming election since the "Mission Accomplished" pix are so, er, dated, shall we say.
Not to mention the flap about "Bush didn't put the banner up the SAILORS put the banner up".
Hilary Clinton was in Afghanistan at the same time. You won't find too much in the news about that, except on the right wing websites that love to foam at the mouth over anything she does.
Should the President visit troops in the war zone? Sure, if he wants to. The problem is that Iraq is still a very dangerous, out of control place and Bush could not make the time commitment and really spend quality time with a great number of troops, commanders or Iraqis.
Don't be fooled, the film we saw of the Prez being royally greeted on Thanksgiving was a staged event, attended by a handpicked regiment of soldiers. I hope they enjoyed themselves, as they are no better than "movie extras" in the ongoing Bush miniseries.
