Instead of having the earthquake happen real quick in the teaser, what if the earthquake was an ongoing event throughout the entire episode? It could start in the beginning, but not actually finish the shaking until towards the end. You could still have the damage you wanted, but you wouldn't lose the tension.

In my opinion, I think it would be a little aprupt to just have the earthquake happen in the teaser all of the sudden and then stop. I know as a reader I would have NO idea what just happened. It would kind of been a waste of a good event. I vote for starting it at the beginning and keep it running throughout the whole episode.
