From the Daily Telegraph. Great news for the big end of the rugby 'pyramid' in England, and the RFU continues its rehabilitation in the eyes of the vast majority of its member clubs. Long may it remain so...

Francis Baron, chief executive of the Rugby Football Union, has used his casting vote to ensure that automatic promotion from the First Division to the Premiership continues next season and beyond.

It is not a decision that will please the 12 Premiership clubs but it is in line with the RFU's 10-year strategic plan and should ensure that First Division rugby does not become a sideshow and that ambitious clubs are not denied the opportunities from which many Premiership clubs have benefited.

A review panel consisting of three Premiership delegates and three from the First Division met this week to finalise whether promotion should be automatic, or whether the First Division champions should play off against the bottom-placed side in the Premiership.

The voting, initially, was 3-3 with Premiership representatives Peter Wheeler, Charles Jillings and Howard Thomas preferring the play-off and First Division delegates David Hammond, Peter Bulless and Geoff Cooke opting for automatic promotion. Baron, as chairman, decided in favour of automatic promotion.

"This was not an easy decision to make as each side presented good arguments," Baron said yesterday. "Having carefully considered the representations, however, I do not believe that the case has been made to change the promotion and relegation arrangement to that of a play-off."

In a statement last night, Premiership Rugby said they "feel the decision is a massive blow to the future of the professional game in this country and, once again, English sport has been let down in ensuring it has the right tools to perform at the highest level on the world stage".
