Hi fellow night owls! Good question! First though, the conversation about the mind is between 2nd birther's, so I feel what I said, for me, still stands. For before the 2nd birth, i think..... that an attitude of "no problem with all arising" is more effective than a regarding of the mind as in the way of Consciousness revealing Itself. For one thing there is no way to stop the mind. Doing the exercize that Saniel uses in the HSS, where you consider and notice that everything, including the self sense, is an object of Consciousness, I think is an excellent way, and doesn't divide oneself. Since you can't put attention back onto Consciousness, and see it as a "something" you don't end up in the self division that you do in the orientation of the mind being in the way. Anything that you can notice has got to be an object to the Subject which is Consciousness. And Consciousness recognizes Itself. It isn't something we get to see or know that is behind thoughts. So, I think all along the way it is fruitless to try to stop or manipulate the thinking mind. Adidi used to use the term "double bind" alot to describe how the mind can, in our not just letting it be, actually end up complicating itself furthur until we end up in a very tight entanglement. Even so though, its still true that it is an object to WHO WE ARE- the Consciousness that is witnessing it. I imagine though that slowing down and sitting quietly letting thoughts come and go is a good asana for doing the practice of what ever inquiry works for a person. But this really seems different to me than trying to get the mind to stop "jabbering"
