Hm.... My visceral, unthought-out response to your question here Cassie is that whatever the mind is (conceptual thinking & use of language?), we need to be speaking to others whether awakened or not, as well as navigating our bodies decisively through the world, through each moment.

As good as it may be to be aware of unnecessary thought (thought that induces unnecessary pain?), still, I have to orient and navigate this complex organism through the complex world, and that invariably requires thought. Also, I need thought to be in touch with you, here, like this. Now that is certainly not an unnecessary activity. For me, it is most necessary to my well-being and enjoyment in the world.

So I seem to want to say that chopping off the mind is about as wise as chopping off my hand. Noticing what I can now do WITH my hand - that's different. How can I touch the world with my thought? How can I infuse my friendships with a new finesse of listening and thinking? What possibilities exist for me now for thinking in the world that didn't exist before?

Maybe seeking is rendered transparent and obsolete to loving: of Self and Other, both.

If that's so, I now have the difficult pleasure of learning how to love where before I was seeking.

Who knows (!) -- but this I do: that I love this thoughtful speaking with you.

Chris
