Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is set to move in front of the star as viewed from Earth on Wednesday, 7 May.

For five hours and 19 minutes, the tiny jet-black spot that is Mercury will slowly cross the Sun's disc.

The event will start at 0612 BST. Mid-transit will be at 0852 BST with Mercury clearing the Sun's disc at 1131 BST.

This will be a rare opportunity for observers in the British Isles to see a complete transit of Mercury, weather permitting. The last one was in 1999.
