Got an email from ofcom re. the Gervais mockery of the Bible on channel 4 a few weeks back. Was going to write a bit about it here but thought it would just be easier to post the letter. In short, though, they are not upholding the complaint:

Dear Mr McCann

Channel Four, Ricky Gervais Live: Animals, 27 August 2004, 9.30pm

Thank you for contacting us. I’m sorry that you were offended by the sequence about Genesis in Ricky Gervais’ stand-up routine.

We have now had the chance to review the context and can understand that not everyone will appreciate this kind of humour. However, we don’t believe there was any deliberate intention to ridicule people’s faith. The comedian was drawing humour from his very personal, unrealistically literal interpretation of scripture. Like the programme, and Ricky Gervais’ established stage character as a whole, the overall tone of this material was deliberately completely over-the-top. In the context of such an off-beat comedy programme, we feel that there was suitable distinction between his clearly individualist comedic interpretation and a more serious and deliberately negative critique of scripture itself.

We do recognise that it's important the religious sensitivities of any group are respected and protected. However, while we accept that this irreverent treatment may be regarded as in dubious taste to some, it was in keeping with the level of humour that is well established on this kind of show and this broadcaster. Ultimately, we didn't feel that the item was likely to cause serious or widespread offence given viewers' expectations of this performer.

Having said all this, we do appreciate how little you cared for this content, and understand our finding will not diminish your unhappiness. Although we haven’t upheld your complaint on this occasion, we are grateful to you for taking the trouble to contact us as it is important for us to be aware of viewers’ opinions of our licensed services.
