I recently went to go see the Mel Gibson movie, "The Passion of the Christ". As a Christian, I was really looking forward to it, but was dissapointed by the film. What bothered me were the embellishments that were made to the account. I can understand some "artistic lisence", but I really felt that some poor scene choices were made.
There is a scene where Judas is sitting beside a tree feeling remorse over having betrayed Jesus. At this time some young children come over to Judas and start harassing him. Then the children's faces change and they transform into demons. Later you see around ten of these children taunting and chasing Judas to the place where he eventually hangs himself. Satan is walking amongst the children as they chase and mock Judas.
Associating children with demons in this film I think was a very bad idea. It is in stark contrast to Jesus view of children as he says in the Bible, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14).
Again in the film children are associated with the demonic during Jesus flogging. When Jesus was being tortured by extreme flogging you see Satan mulling about the crowd holding what appears to be a baby Satan. He holds it lovingly to his chest in a baby blanket. This little baby fiend looks quite despicable. So, now we not only have children associated with the demonic, now babies. And none of this is in the Bible at all. I feel it was in poor taste and totally unecessary.
The use of gory horror scenes in the film was also excessive. The movie shows Satan in the garden where Jesus prays, "Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done". (Luke 22:42). Satan is seen with some maggot/snake going up through his nose muttering things to Jesus. This is totally opposite of what really happened in that garden. The Bible says in this very passage that an angel appeared to Jesus at that time in order to strengthen him! (Luke 22:43).
We later see more maggots in the film when a closeup of a dead maggot infested donkey is focused on in the field where Judas hangs himself. But, the most disturbing use of unecessary gore was used near the end of the film. Jesus was hanging between the two theives when suddenly a crow flies up to one of the theives and pecks his eye out in a terrible bloody scene. This is a moment in the film where Jesus is enduring the most amount of suffering but the viewers attention is deverted to the theif's suffering when his eye is violently pecked out. Of course we know that a crow pecking out one of the theives eyes never did happen. And everyone knows that crows are afraid of people! That's why farmer's use "scare crows". It was just another hollywood special effect. But this effect is really unrealistic and might leave the viewer wondering if the events of Jesus own suffering was unrealistic too!
Jesus really did suffer the physical tortures shown in the film and they were quite accurate. It makes it a shame that the producers could not control themselves and added such foolish embellishments to the film.
