Hi silverfox,

Good question.

In Exodus 20:13 the fifth Commandment: "Thou Shalt Not Kill" (in the KJV), the word "Kill" is "Ratsach" in the Hebrew, which means "murder". The text would therefore be more accurately translated "Thou Shalt Not murder".

But God did command the ancient Isrealites to kill. This is difficult for modern day people to come to terms with, granted. However, there is no contradiction between the commandment not to murder and killing. This is because when the Isrealites killed, they were not murdering. They were obeying God's commands.

The word "witch" in the KJV in Exodus 22:18 is usually better translated as "sorceress". Whatever this was, it was most certainly far different than modern witches. Also, even though it does seem that these people (whoever they were) were not tolerated to the extent that they were indeed put to death, we must remember that this was under the ancient Mosaic Law. It has no bearing whatsoever on Bible believers today.
