This is a pretty contentious verse today, as you might imagine. And we have King James I of England (or James VI of Scotland, however you want to call him) to thank for it. He was obsessed with witchcraft and daemonology, so much so that he published a treatise on it himself. In the then-new translation of the Bible which he commissioned, the original Greek "pharmakon" which meant "poisoner" or "maleficent one" became rendered as "witch," solely for James' benefit.

Yes, I am definitively a geek. :\
