And because of it I can't say that I fully support legalization, even of something as relatively benign as pot. The only benefit I can see from legalization is curtailing the black market for drugs and the resulting revenue stream that supports the current drug trade. The downside to legalization is that it legitimizes drugs. Gives them society's stamp of approval. That's bad. We are already a society plagued with problems and drugs could be seen as an easy way out for disenchanted people. That threat shouldn't be underestimated either. Add to that our inability to understand and cope with mental illness (a problem I believe legalized drugs would exacerbate) and the potential harm to society could be almost as bad (if not worse) than what we are suffering today.

It's a problem of Gordian proportions!
