Peyronie's Disease and Abnormally Bent Penis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options

Peyronie's disease consists of hard, fibrous tissue, called plaques, developing within the penile shaft. The plaques are hard, thickened and stiff areas, actually a kind of internal scarring. In this fibroid tissue also calcium compounds can accumulate, making the plaques even harder.
The Peyronie's disease is also called cavernositis, and also sometimes plastic induration. There is probably a chronic inflammation process that leads to this scarring.
The thickened area has less blood flow than normal penile tissue, and do not fill with blood and swell as the normal spongy areas in the inside of the penis. Therefore the penis swells more at the opposite side, and gets a curvature towards the side containing the plaques when erected.
If the plaques are found at several places, more complex deformations will develop. The abnormal bending, twisting or swelling within the penis, often also lead to painful erections.
Any man from the age of 18 and upwards can develop Peyronie's disease. The average age of men suffering from Peyronie`s disease is 50.
THE SYMPTOMS AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE CONDITION
The three main characteristics of cavernositis are:
- One or more small hard lumps underneath the skin, or a continuous hard, stiff and thickened area.
- Abnormal bent or crooked penis when erect. All penises have some curvature, but by this disease, the penile bend increases, and one may get a very curved penis. The penis may be bent as a banana or in an angular fashion. The penile bending is most often up, but may be down, to the left side, to right or sloping.
-The bending is usually to the same side as that of the hard thickened area when the penis is erected.
-The hard areas in the erected penis may look like bumps, making the penis irregular.
- Sometimes the penis bends greatly enough to make sexual intercourse difficult, or impossible.
- Pain during erections caused by the pressure from the hard areas in the penis, or from the stretched skin at the opposite side of the penis.
- One may not notice the bend immediately, as it tends to develop over one to three months and later than the hardness and stiffness of the indurations.
- The plastic induration may progress and cause impotence. Sometimes the Peyroni's disease will clear up by itself, but this may take several years.
THE CAUSES OF PEYRONIE¨S DISEASE
The exact cause of the induration is unknown. It's not a sign of an underlying serious condition, and it is not a sexually transmitted infection. It is possible that the disease can begin with an inflammation in the penile tissue. An inflammation may be caused by an allergic or auto-immune reaction. Although the Peyronie's disease is not an infection, an initial infection can damage the penile tissue and cause an inflammation that develops into Peyronie's disease. Men having the inflammatory condition called Systemic Lupus Erytematosus more often get Peyronie's disease.
Vitamin E deficiency seems to be a contributing factor in causing the disease. Diabetes may cause damage of blood vessels, and if this damage occurs in the erectile bodies of the penis, Peyronie's disease can develop. Peyronie's disease is sometimes a side effect of the drug Inderal (propanolol) used against high blood pressure.
Sometimes a physical injury to the penis that causes internal bleeding, or a series of such injuries, is the initial cause. A habit of violent sexual activity may cause such injuries. It is thought that some men may have a genetic disposition to the condition.
Plastic induration of the penis is not a cancer, and cannot cause cancer, however a lump or deformation in your genitals that develops, must be examined.
TREATMENT OG PEYRONIE'S DISEASE
Not all men with Payronie's disease require treatment. The disease sometimes go away by itself. If the condition is pronounced, it is also difficult to find a remedy that can cure every sign of the disease, but several methods can take away most penis changes associated with Peyronie's. Here is a survey of treatment methods used today.
Tamoxifen - In its early stages of the disease a medication called Tamoxifen has been shown to prevent the formation of the fibrous plaque by Peyronie's disease. This drug is also used in the treatment of breast cancer, but the two conditions are not related.
Vitamin E and B - Vitamin E and B is sometimes effective in easing the pain and as a treatment for the penile deformity by Peyronie's disease.
Verapamil - Verapamil, often used in the treatment of high blood pressure, has been shown to decrease the size of the plaque and decrease the pain when injected directly into the plaque, and thus also improve the penis shape distortion by peyronie's disease.
Shock wave therapy - Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, or ESWT, a new treatment, is being used in some hospitals for the Peyronie's disease. Although the initial results of this new approach to treat Peyronie's disease have been promising, the long-term outcome is still undetermined.
Surgery - This is sometimes considered if Payroni's disease has lasted for a year or more and it hasn't progressed or regressed for at least three months. By the Nesbitt procedure one removes tissue opposite to the curve to straighten the penis. Another procedure involves putting a graft or part of a vein within the fibrous plaque to lengthen this area. In certain cases of Pyrenees disease, surgical insertion of a penile prosthesis (implant) is recommended.
Radiation therapy - This treatment modality has been tried, but the results are unpredictable and sometimes the opposite of the intended one.

Narrow Foreskin in Boys or Phimosis - How to Treat it

By phimosis the foreskin of a boy or man is so narrow in the end that it cannot be pulled down. There are mainly two types of phimosis. In one type, the foreskin is elastic so that it can be stretched wider at least to some extent. In the other type there are scars or indurations around the tip that makes it totally rigid.
Sometimes the phimosis is partial, so that the foreskin can be pulled down, but not pulled back again. When the foreskin is trapped in a retracted position, it is called paraphimosis. This condition should be regarded as an emergency, since the tight foreskin can cut off the blood supply to the penile head.
A boy usually have a narrow foreskin in his earliest years and the foreskin also is fixed to the penis head. Gradually the tip widens and the foreskin gets loose so that it can be pulled down. Usually it is possible to withdraw it when the boy is 4-7 years old, and the diagnosis phimosis is therefore usually not done at a very young boy. Phimosis also usually gets away by itself before or during puberty.
If the opening in the foreskin tip is very narrow, the foreskin will often get inflated by urine during voiding, an occurrence called ballooning. Phimosis can cause inflammation in the foreskin and at the penile head, caused by gathering of smegma and substances from the urine, and subsequent growth of bacteria, but it does not occur in every case. The narrow foreskin can make sex and ejaculation cumbersome.
In some boys the foreskin just does not widen, so it remains very narrow, and then you usually get the elastic type of phimosis. Other boys or men get infections or inflammations in the foreskin that produce scars and constrictions that make it difficult to pull it down, so you get the rigid type of phimosis. The infections are usually due to bad hygiene.
The best way of preventing phimosis due to infections and scarring is daily to pull back very gently the foreskin as far as it gets without resistance, wash it well with some mild soap, and then flush it well. The parents should do this on yong boys, while older boys, teens and adults should do this by themselves. One should never try to force the foreskin down, however. Some doctors warn against using any kind of soap and recommend pure water.
There are great cultural differences regarding treatment of phimosis between the regions of the World. At some places traditional treatment for phimosis has been circumcision. It has however been shown that phimosis can be cured in most instances without surgery, especially the elastic type:
In boys before puberty, the simplest treatment is daily flushing with clean water under the foreskin to take away impurities, while waiting for the condition to resolve by itself. Complications or special susceptibility for infection, like in diabetic boys, can make more specific treatment necessary at an early age. Some boys may also feel it to be more comfortable after treatment.
Salves with corticosteroids can also be used 4-6 weeks to make the foreskin softer and combine it with gentle daily attempts to pull the foreskin back. After some weeks the foreskin can usually be pulled back normally in 70% of the cases. On the market you can also find salves based on herbal extracts for the same use.
A simple traditional and often successful treatment directed at the condition is each day to stretch the tip of the penis mechanically, and also gently pull it back as long as it gets without resistance, usually with the fingers. The method should preferably be done together with flushing and good washing around the tip. Older boys can learn to perform this method themselves.
By the inelastic type of phimosis some kind of surgery will sometimes be necessary, but in many communities surgery is regarded as the last option due to several factors: It is difficult to obtain a real good result functionally and aesthetically by surgery, regardless of method. There is a risk for complications as infections, bleedings and scarring, and there is a risk connected to anesthesia.
Circumcision will solve the initial problem, but a full circumcision will alter the penis in a way that the boy or man not always will be pleased with, even when the procedure is fully successful, and this operation also gives the greatest risk for all complications. In addition to the complications mentioned, the exposed penile head will be subjected to mechanical irritation, as a responce grow thicker, and can thereby loose sensitivity. Circumcision will leave a ring of scar just below the penile head that may not look good and feel uncomfortable. Also the reduced amount of skin on the penis can make erections more difficult.
Often one can cut off an inelastic ring at the tip, and eventually also use the other methods some time afterwards. Some surgeons do a more complicated reshaping of the foreskin to widen it (preputial plasty), and in many countries in Europe this is the recommended method when surgery is necessary.
When consulting a doctor for treatment of phimosis, one should disqus the methods available to find that which fits best the interest for the patient, which often will be a young boy, and not automatically accept a suggestion for circumcision. If the doctor is rigidly inclined towards circumcision, a second opinion should be consulted.

Okay, this is what I made up to happen after "Eye of the Tiger".
"Embrace"
{School hallway}
[i][b]~Jimmy, Craig, and Marco enter Degrassi. They notice a lot of guys looking a certain way.~[/b]
Marco: What's everybody lookin' at?
Jimmy: I don't know.
Craig: I do. (points) Her right there.
[b]~Marco and Jimmy look at where Craig is pointing.~[/b]
Craig: I can't say I blame 'em. I heard we were getting a new student, but I didn't know we were getting a goddess.
Jimmy: Man, did you forget that you're married?
Craig: Shut up. We're not married.
Marco: Well whatever the case, you're with Ash and I think you should try and stick to being with one girl at a time.
Jimmy: Yeah, yo' playa skills ain't all that.
[b]~Craig playfully pushes Jimmy. Jimmy laughs a little and so does Marco.~[/b]
Craig: But it's okay to look. Why don't you give it a try Jimmy?
Jimmy: And end up like you were some months back? Don't think so.
Craig: You're just lookin'. It's okay to look.
Jimmy: (looks at her) Yeah........it's okay to look.
{Later in the school hallway}
[b]~Jimmy struggles to get a textbook from the top of his locker. The new girl walks to the locker right next to his and opens it. She takes her books out and closes her locker. She notices Jimmy's having a little trouble.[/b]
NewGirl: (slight Hispanic accent) Do you need help?
Jimmy: (grunts)::slightly irritated:: No. I'm perfectly capable of getting a book.
NewGirl: (shrugs) Okay. (starts to walk away)
[b]~Jimmy continues to struggle with the book. He looks around and realizes she's the only one around to help him.~[/b]
Jimmy: I guess I could use your help just this one.
NewGirl: I thought you'd never ask. (walks back over to him and gets the book) Here you go. (hands it to him) And it's okay.
Jimmy: What's okay?
NewGirl: To accept help. You shouldn't be ashamed of your handicap.
Jimmy: Hey, I ain't handicapped.
NewGirl: Really? You coulda fooled me. So what do you call having to get around in a wheelchair?
Jimmy:......
NewGirl: I'm not tryna offend you, just embrace your situation. (starts to walk away)
Jimmy: Do you know where you're going?
NewGirl: (turns around) Actually, no. Can you help me?
Jimmy: Sure, lemme see your schedule.
[b]~She hands him her schedule.~[/b]
Jimmy: We're goin' to the same class, so follow me. (starts rolling)
NewGirl: Okay. (follows)
{Mr. Simpsons class}
[b]~Toby is sitting in class. Mr. Simpson starts passing out a worksheet.~[/b]
Mr. Simpson: Okay class, today youre going to construct your own chat rooms. These handouts will pretty much help you out, but if you have any questions just ask me. (continues passing out papers)
[b]~Mr. Simpson hands Toby his paper and keeps going. Toby looks at the paper and is confused.~[/b]
Toby: (turns to his right and whispers) JT.
JT: What?
Toby: Does your paper look as confusing as mine?
JT: What are you talking about? (looks at both papers) Theres nothing confusing about any of this.
Toby: How can you say that? This paper doesnt make any sense.
JT: No, youre the one not making sense. Your papers fine.
[b]~Toby looks at his paper again and still cant understand it.[/b]
Toby: (turns to his left and whispers) Emma.
Emma: Hmm?
Toby: I dont know why, but I cant understand a word on this paper.
Emma: Let me see. (looks at his paper and then hers) UhToby?
Toby: Yeah?
Emma: Our papers are exactly the same and I can understand them both. Are you confused by the directions?
Toby: I cant even read the directions. The words are all jumbled up and dont make sense.
Emma: Oh.how about I walk you through it then?
Toby: Sure.
{Ms. Kwans classroom}
[b]~Jimmy and the new girl enter Ms. Kwans classroom. Ms. Kwan notices.~[/b]
Ms. Kwan: Mr. Brooks, youre late.
Jimmy: Well, I found this young lady wandering the halls trying to find her class, so I helped her.
Ms. Kwan: Okay, youre off the hook this time. Make sure there is no next time.
Jimmy: Yes maam. (goes to his space)
Ms. Kwan: Okay class, we have a new student. Im going to let her introduce herself.
NewGirl: Well, my name is Saria[/i] {pronounced Suh-rye-yuh} [i]Morales. Im originally from Manizales, Colombia. After a few years my family moved to New York in the United States. Some things came up and my sister and I moved here. Now I live in Toronto. (turns toward Ms. Kwan) Im done.
[b]~Paige raises her hand.~[/b]
Ms. Kwan: You have a question Ms. Michalchuk?
Paige: Yes. Um::messes her name up on purpose:: Suh-ree-yuh.
Saria: Suh-rye-yuh.
Paige: ::doesnt care:: Yeah. Are you any kin to J.Lo?
[b]~Slight giggles.~[/b]
Saria: She wishes.
Class: Oooooh.
Ms. Kwan: Okay, I think thats enough. You can take your seat now Ms. Morales.
[b]~Ms. Kwan starts talking while Saria takes her seat. She gives Paige a smug look and turns her attention to Ms. Kwan. Paige rolls her eyes.[/b]
{The end of class in the hallway}
Paige: Can you believe that J.Lo wannabe and how she treated me?
Marco: Paige, you werent exactly hospitable to begin with.
Hazel: Youre just mad because she didnt answer the way you wanted.
Marco: And why do you keep calling her J.Lo?
Hazel: She looks nothing like her.
Jimmy: Sounds nothing like her.
Craig: And her butts much bigger.
[b]~Everybody looks at him funny.~[/b]
Craig: I didnt mean to say that out loud.
Paige: Anyway, nobody talks to me that way and gets away with it.
{Meanwhile}
JT: I dont know whats wrong with you Tobs. You were acting crazy in media immersion and then you started bugging in English. Whats with you man?
Toby: I dont know. Maybe I need some new glasses or something. Nothing looks right.
Liberty: (walks over to them) Whats going on?
Toby: Well
JT: Nothing my little cupcake. (leans in and starts kissing her)
Toby: Actually, Im having a little issue.
[b]~They continue kissing.~[/b]
Toby: You know what, Im just gonna leave you two alone. (walks away)
{In Mr. Simpsons classroom}
[b]~Saria walks into the classroom and looks for a seat. She finds one next to Jimmy and sits down.~[/b]
Saria: We just keep runnin into each other, huh?
Jimmy: I dont know about runnin, but we do see each other a lot.
Saria: (laughs) You know, fate is funny.
Jimmy: How?
Saria: Well, I know this girl who kept runnin into this one guy. Eventually, they became an item. Then they were engaged. Now, theyre married.
Jimmy: Oh really? And who would the lucky couple be?
Saria: My aunt and uncle. Seventeen years and goin strong.
Jimmy: Congratulations. I thought you were gonna say your parents.
Saria: Well, my parents wouldve been married for twenty years, but theyre gone.
Jimmy: OhIm sorry.
Saria: Dont worry about it. Its not your fault. Besides, they wouldnt want me to be mournin em. Theyd want me to just live my life. So thats what Ive been doin.
Jimmy: Wow.
Saria: What?
Jimmy: How do you do it? I mean, here we are talkin about your parents passing and you have the most positive attitude Ive ever seen.
Saria: Well thank you. I try not to feel sorry for myself. Self-pity ispitiful.
[b]~Jimmy doesnt say anything. He just turns his head away from her so she doesnt see his face.~[/b]
Saria: Jimmy?
Jimmy: (doesnt turn around) Yeah?
Saria: Whats so interesting over there?
Jimmy: (sighs and turns around) Nothing. Its just Ive been doing some self-pitying and I felt kinda guilty.
Saria: Well, you dont have to. I wasnt tryna take a shot at you. I was just talkin. But you should stop feeling sorry for yourself. Thats not gonna make it any better. (pauses) Have you considered physical therapy?
Jimmy: Yeah, but why bother? Its not gonna work.
Saria: You dont know that.
Jimmy: The doctors said
Saria: The doctors arent always right. I know we just met and all, but I believe you can do it. If I volunteer to help you, will you do it?
Jimmy: Like you said, we just met. (turns the opposite way)
Saria: (scoots her chair closer to him so shes right at his ear) I wanna help you. Dont you wanna do all the things you used to?
Jimmy: What happened to embrace you situation?
Saria: Well, it doesnt look like youre gonna do that any time soon. So what do you think?
Jimmy: What do I think? I think I just met you, dont know who you are, and really dont wanna find out.
[b]~She scoots her chair over and sits back.~[/b]
{Meanwhile in Ms. Hatzilakos classroom}
[b]~Tobys struggling to read the reading assignment. Liberty notices.~[/b]
Liberty: Toby, are you okay?
Toby: Im fine, just fine.
Liberty: It doesnt look like you are. Are you having trouble reading?
Toby: No, Im fine. I can read exactly what it says.
Liberty: Then what does it say?
Toby: The turtle. Well you have the assignment in front of you, why dont you read it?
{After class outside the classroom}
Liberty: Toby wait.
Toby: What do you want?
Liberty: Toby, what is wrong with you?
Toby: Nothing, Im just having a little trouble reading, thats all. I need to go see my optometrist about a stronger prescription for my glasses.
Liberty: Is it blurry when you read?
Toby: No.
Liberty: Lemme guess. The words youre reading dont make sense. Sometimes you see words that dont even exist.
Toby: Yeeeeah, howd you know?
Liberty: Hello, did you forget I have dyscalculia? Similar symptoms, just with math.
Toby: Wait, are you saying you think I have dyslexia?
Liberty: Its possible.
Toby: No, I cant. Im not dumb.
Liberty: Being dyslexic doesnt mean youre dumb. You just learn differently. You should get tested and find out. Ill help you if you want.
Toby: Well.
[b]~Liberty gives him a hopeful look.~[/b]
Toby: Okay.
Liberty: Good. Ill find some information for you.
{In the gym}
[b]~Saria is shooting hoops. She makes all of them. She misses one and it rolls all the way to the other side of the gym and lands next to Jimmy. He picks it up and rolls over to her.~[/b]
Jimmy: You play ball?
Saria: I play a little of everything.
Jimmy: (passes her the ball) Oh.
Saria: Thanks. (shoots another basket and makes it)
Jimmy: Wow. Youre actually pretty good. Well, at makin baskets. (chuckles)
Saria: Well, at least Im good at somethin.
Jimmy: Im sorry about earlier. Its just that, nobody really talks about it. I just live life from day to day.
Saria: You never think of your future?
Jimmy: Of course I do, but not of what I could do. Just what I cant.
Saria: Well, I cant say Ive been in your position. The closest I came to bein handicapped was when I sprained my ankle. (pauses) You know, you could do physical therapy. (makes another shot) And if you dont want to there are many things you can do in a wheelchair.
Jimmy: Like what?
Saria: I noticed that you were MVP for the basketball team, two years runnin. You could do Special Olympics. (makes another shot)
Jimmy: Im not retarded.
Saria: Its not just for mentally challenged. Its for people with disabilities also.
Jimmy: I dont think thats gonna happen.
Saria: Well, you could always do the physical therapy. (makes another shot)
Jimmy: (laughs) Youre not gonna let that go, are you?
Saria: (smiles and laughs) Depends, are you gonna say yes? (dribbles the ball between her legs and tries to make another shot; Jimmy rolls up to her and takes the ball)
Jimmy: I guess so. As long as you go with me.
Saria: I mightif you give me back my ball.
Jimmy: Only if you say yes.
Saria: Okayyes. The ball?
