Latest Team News including the New Recruits.

Croydon Athletic are delighted to announce the following signings:

Barry Stevens. (Epsom & Ewell).

Adrian Toppin. (Epsom & Ewell).

John Pomroy. (Lewes).

Danny Arkwright. (Corinthian Casuals).

Nigel Webb. (Tooting & Mitcham).

Tony Webb. (Tooting & Mitcham).

Matt Martin. (Croydon).

Anthony Funnell. (Nuwood).

Hayden has been interested in signing Barry Stevens for the last twelve months but has been waiting for his Epsom & Ewell contract to expire. The twenty-two year old right-sided midfield player signs for Croydon Athletic as Epsom’s Player of the Year.

Adrian Toppin is another player Bird has been watching for a number of months. Toppin is 24 and at 6ft 2”, is equally as comfortable playing in defence, as he is in midfield.

John Pomroy scored twenty goals for Chertsey Town last season, before his deadline day transfer to Lewes. The former Bognor Regis Town striker was highly rated by Jimmy Quinn and decided to leave The Dripping Pan when Quinn departed. He is believed to have chosen a move to Mayfields despite a number of club’s chasing the goal-scorer’s signature.

The Manager has added to the forward line further, by signing Nigel Webb. Webb is another proven goal-scorer, having scored 94 goals in 115 games for Tooting & Mitcham. Having fallen out with Richard Cadette, Webb decided to leave Bishopsford Road and has had numerous offers during the close season, including the chance to sign for Dulwich Hamlet.

Former Sutton United and Whyteleafe central defender Danny Arkwright, has signed from Corinthian Casuals. Arkwright, at 6ft 4” is the tallest defender in the division and also has Football League experience with Brighton & Hove Albion, under the leadership of Micky Adams and Glen Cockerill.

Anthony Funnell returns to the Club. Following a season on the sidelines, caused by an ankle ligament injury, the 23 year old sweeper gained his full fitness with Nuwood last season. The defender returns to Mayfields in excellent physical condition and determined to win a place in the team.

Tony Webb signs from Tooting & Mitcham having won the club’s Player of the Year twice in three years. At 29, Webb is an experienced goalkeeper who has signed to challenge Robert Frankland for the goalkeeper’s jersey.

Competition for the goalkeeping position will certainly be fierce. Matt Martin has arrived from local rivals Croydon and is striving to beat-off Frankland and Martin for the fight to be the No.1 choice.

In addition to the new signings, Hayden Bird confirmed Barry Kingsford has made a complete recovery and returned to full training on 3rd July.

From last season’s youth team, Josh Smith, Jay Gasson, Terry Fennessey and Danny Clayton have all signed First Team forms.

We are delighted to confirm that every player from last seasons squad, that features in the Manager’s plans, have all signed new deals. Many of our players were approached during the Summer, but all of the players have committed their futures to Croydon Athletic. Hayden wishes to go on record in complimenting the loyalty of the players and to show both his gratitude and his appreciation to all of the players.

With the squad being strengthened, inevitably a few players have left the Club. Byron Glasgow, Jimmy Aschner, Steve Golding, Tommy Ellis, Nathan Healey, Kristian Sorensen, Justin Jones, Paul Baines and Danny Cecil will not be with us next season.

Jimmy Aschner has decided to head home to Australia, while Ellis, Golding, Cecil and Healey all leave Croydon Athletic in search for First Team Football. Kristian Sorensen and Paul Baines have retired, while Justin Jones and Byron Glasgow have been released. Justin was unable to commit himself this season due to his work commitments. Bird admitted his disappointment at releasing Glasgow, but feels the decision was in the best interests of the team. The player was not showing the same level of commitment as rest of the squad and indeed the commitment levels that the football club require.

Hayden has gone on record in thanking all of the players for their service to the Club and wishing them every success in the future.
