Steve Friend, chairman of Ryman League Premier Division leaders Carshalton Athletic, has finally decided to reveal the reasons behind the surprise departure of manager Graham Roberts, the man who guided the Robins to promotion last season.

The lack of official news concerning former Spurs and England star Roberts' (pictured) departure led to a great deal of speculation, accusations and counter-accusations, but Friend has decided that enough is enough and has issued the following statement:

"I feel compelled to set the records straight regarding the departure of Graham Roberts from Carshalton Athletic on 9th June 2003.

"There are many people who felt that the Boards decision was harsh in reducing the playing budget for the current season this was necessary due to the overrun of £40,000 last season some of which never reached the players pockets.

"I was astounded when I discovered that Graham had on more than one occasion fined the players for poor performances and in one instance a whole weeks wages, which he had kept for himself. We had three young contract players in our reserve side some of who throughout the season received reduced wages or none at all.

"There was evidence of ghosting players who never got paid and promised goal bonuses were never paid.To top it all there were ten players who never received their final wage packets at the end of the season from Graham who was in possession and in control of those monies. The club has now addressed these issues having to again pay the players concerned.

"All in all we achieved promotion as Ryman League Division One South champions something we are proud of but at a price and at the demise and sacking of our manager Graham Roberts for misappropriation of club monies and who, unbeknown to the rest of his football management team, duped the club by keeping thousands of pounds for himself and leaving us to pick up the pieces."

(Steve Friend)
