Subject: Just early this year I converted to vegetarianism, after a lot of reasearch. I'd felt it coming on for years. I am very happy with my decision. More inside on WHY if you'd like to know -

I will gently disagree that we were 'meant' to eat meat, they (through research) still haven't decided one way or the other on the teeth thing. So far as I've found it stands that we can live as carnivores or herbivores.

I don't know that I would agree with the statement that GOD put animals on this earth for us to eat. But if that was his/her intent I'd say we have grossly abused the gift.

We can get along just fine without meat and often are much healthier without it, especially given the modern trend of hormones, additives etc. that they put in feed these days to get more out of a buck. Do you really know what you're putting into your body? Indians had a much different way of life than we have now and 'factory farming' was not in use then. They respected the animals that gave them food and clothing. They did not abuse the land or the animals that helped them to sustain their lives.

I became a vegatarian because of the vicious and cruel way animals are treated in what is now called 'factory farming', which is the mass food production market. It's really sickening what pain, suffering and unkindess animals are put through before they end up on your supermarket counter. There is absolutely no excuse for it other than to make a profit as cheaply and quickly as they can. Just one example - Animals are confined in small, filthy cages, many with not even enough room to turn around. Chickens have the tips of their beaks singed off with a hot iron (nothing for the pain) so that they do not peck at each other, something they are prone to do because of the intensely stressful and painful conditions they are kept under. Many times these animals are still alive when skinned and die suffering this way. Some animals live and die never having even walked. The mass system of slaughter is far from perfect. Many mass dairy cow farms have their cows in disgustingly small stalls and their babies are taken away to be slaughtered as soon as they are born so that we humans can have their milk. If their not slaughtered they're used as dairy cows themselves since you can only force so much out of one cow's lifetime and they want a ready supply of more. There is much more I could go on about here but I will leave it at that, I think most people do not realize what the animals are put through that end up on the supermarket shelves and quite honestly do not want to know. I'm not talking about local farmers but rather mass production farming and slaughtering that makes up the majority of the market.

A second reason is that every living thing has an energy, when you consume an animal a part of that energy mingles in with yours, along with it any negativity due to cruel treatment, sickness, fear etc. that the animal carried when it was slaughtered. I decided I no longer wanted any part of that in my energy and feel much better without it.

When I told my parents I had decided to become a vegatarian my Mom said - I knew someday you would. Because it had always bothered me the way animals were treated. And every time I researched into it I'd come away with tears and a feeling of disgust. I used to think it would be too hard to give up meat but I was pleasantly surprised at just how easy it was. As for dairy, I try to use Soy milk as much as possible and when I do use regular milk I make sure it's organic.

Thanks for listening. :)

Linda
