Subject: I think my main concern with eating meat and animal products is the additives that are being added. I don't think I would have a problem eating free range, organic chicken, beef, etc. I don't agree with the conditions some farmers keep their animals in either. (I have always refused to eat veal). However, as I said, it is mainly a health thing for me....what are we doing to our bodies because of growth hormones/antibiotics/etc. in our food? Kinda scary.

[> I have also decided to go organic/vegetarian as much as possible for all the reasons that Linda and Brenda say. When I do buy meat, it is the free range kind. Just get ahold of the book, "Fast Food Nation" to get a peek into what our food goes thru before reaching us. Besides not supporting cruelty of animals, I like knowing that my chickens have been given vitamins and fresh air to keep them healthy rather than given drugs in case they get some terrible diseases from their horrible living conditions. It's more expensive but I figure so is medical treatment for health issues caused by questionable food sources. Everything TASTES better organic, too. We feel more satisfied, so we eat less. But I agree with Jeannine, vegetarian meals need more preparation. Good thing my family likes all kinds of ethnic foods. *G* -- Lissa, 08:34:50 07/27/03 Sun

[> [> BTW I noticed that the food in Germany tastes much better because they still have all their local farms and the whole country follows what we call organic practices. IMHO It's a fine example of traditions winning out over "innovations." -- Lissa, 08:36:24 07/27/03 Sun

[> [> [> Local meat does taste better, I agree, but the best taste a experienced in Canada actually. I had a steak there that tasted like the meat in Germany tasted in my childhood. They just feed the animals different nowadays I think. -- Martina, 09:32:04 07/28/03 Mon

[> [> Lissa, that's how I look at it when I buy organic, it's more expensive yes but worth it in the long run! Luckily I have a great shop that opened up a few months ago nearby and almost everything they sell is organic. Having a nice variety readily available sure helps. They also cator to vegetarians and have a wonderful selection of products! And for those that like meat they have a selection of free range products, including broth's. and nitrate free bacon. They even have organic make-up and I've fallen in love with Burt's Bee's products, my skin has absolutely never looked better! :) -- Linda in sw va, 13:41:48 07/28/03 Mon

[> [> [> Sorry, but I canīt imagine nitrate free bacon. What does it taste like? Does it have a taste?*lol* In Germany bacon always is smoked meat that has to be salty to stop it from rotting away within days. So how do they replace the salt? Just curious here.*g* -- Martina, 13:58:51 07/29/03 Tue

[> [> [> [> Hi Martina! I"m no expert but I don't think taking the nitrates out removes the salt, I think although nitrates contain a type of salt they are also some kind of preserative that is supposed to be very bad for you. I read somewhere that in European countries it's not even allowed in the food?? Can you check your bacon and see? LOL We have it in Hot Dogs and Bacon here, and as it figures those are two of my son's fav foods. :( I have no idea what the nitrate free bacon taste like as I've never tried it, but one day I will run it by Jason and he can give it his seal of approval, or not. :) -- Linda in sw va, 18:52:47 07/29/03 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> Thanks Linda, I informed myself about the nitrate and found out that it is a salt indeed, but not one that they add.*lol* It is in the meat because the animals eat the grass of overly manured fields. So that special bacon must be from animals that have been fed with nitrate free food. That is cool. I havenīt seen it here so far, because we live in the country and the manure on the fields is a huge problem. There simply is no land you could grow anything nitrate free on. Only our water is free of it, because the european water law is the worlds most strict one. They have to filter it out. Because of those strong controls our tab water is healthier than any bottled water we could buy. -- Martina, 03:38:41 07/30/03 Wed

[> [> [> [> [> [> Thanks Martina, that's very interesting, I didn't know exactly what they were. I remember reading articles on it years ago and think of it now and then when I get concerned that Jason (my little boy) might be eating too much of it. This is the first I've seen of nitrate free bacon though, we live in the country here too. -- Linda in sw va, 09:17:39 07/30/03 Wed
