Subject: I've thought of myself as a bit of a hypocrite because every week I play hymns for church services at a nearby Nursing Home, but I don't attend church or believe in many of its teachings. However, I still support my local church with a monthly pledge. This comes in handy at income tax time >>>>>

(This was taking too long) I feel the church must continue, but I'm not a part of it. It gave me a good start. My father and mother were choir members for a total of 102 years (between them), so I have that tie to it. I love playing the old hymns and hearing them sung. I even pitch in a little more when a minister fails to show up at the Nursing Home. I can put on a good act, but I don't believe in much of it. I guess I keep an open mind on religion. I don't really believe in life after death. As far as eternal punishment is concerned, we make our own hell right here on earth. I think Jesus was a great teacher and base much of my attitude to life on what he taught, but I don't believe in the miracles or in his resuurection. Despite all this, I do honor those who have a belief in every facet of Christianity, or, if they are of another faith, in their beliefs.

I recall the debate in the sixties on whether God was dead. I have to go along with the view that the God who many worship never was alive, thus he isn't dead. Despite all this, I ponder the wonders of the universe and debate how all this could have happened spontaneously. This is a very deep subject, better to be left for a long discussion some evening when all is quiet and a few of us wish to debate the eternal questions for hours. Obviously, there are many inconsistencies in my views, so I would welcome a discussion.

[> [> Ron, that was a beautiful, honest post and I would thoroughly enjoy having a discussion with you and whoever else would like to join in. Like you and Betsy, one of the integral church experiences of my youth was singing all kinds of wonderful church songs. I have my own methodist hymnal and it is such a joy for me to flip thru it and sing from memory many of the songs. I missed that singing the most all those years I was practicing catholicism. The church of my youth also had a fantastic choir that used to sing glorious selections such as Handel's Messiah. (I'm a soprano and hitting the high notes in "Messiah" was a spiritual experience *G*). As with most of us here, I continue to assemble my own beliefs about God and Jesus. The next church we attend will be chosen for it's musical selections. I can take care of my own spirituality. There is nothing like the experience of being in the midst of a congregation belting out a song such as "When morning gilds the skies." *G* -- Lissa, 10:59:37 06/26/03 Thu
