despite a fighting display of football at old trafford tonight manchester united are dismissed from the champions league cup. the performances by van nistelrooy, o'shea, giggs, beckham and solskjaer in particular were exemplary. but once again it was in defence where they let themselves down with some shoddy performances from bartez in goal and rio ferdinand whose lack of pace and awareness were responsible for the concession of the first goal. i have never regarded ferdinand as international material and tonight he proved just how uncoordinated a centre-back he really is. all the headlines tomorrow will no doubt be in salute of ronaldo's hat-trick but i can quite honestly say that all but the second, ironically the most unspectacular, goal were very tame chances indeed. if bartez' lack of credibility was overshadowed by ferdinand's for the first goal he certainly didn't give away the limelight for the third. ronaldo struck the ball from almost twenty five yards out, nowhere near full power and at a very catchable height. look how low the ball was when it sailed over bartez and you cannot fail to point the finger of responsibility at him. he dived and went to ground far too early and it was these glaring errors plus the shamefully apparent inadequacy once again from roy keane that so badly let down what was a heroic attempt to plunder a result by a determined and committed united front line.
