The thing is, if it's a character that comes into my fandom and takes up center stage, I cry Sue.

It might be possible to write a story about a character whose purpose is so marginal that the other characters only come over to tell her things; Oracle, the wheelchair spy of Batman's, is such a character. She sits in her apartment and the heroes swing by to talk to her.

But the thing that makes Oracle a non-Sue is that 1) she answers to Batman, who does things, and 2) she's followed character evolution from Batgirl to wheelchair detective after she was shot in the spine.
