Nah, for the chocobo you just need the chocobo lure materia. You can get it at that little farm. (Have Cloud "speak" to the chocobos in the field. They will do a little dance and then leave the chocobo lure materia. Equip it and catch one of those babies outside of the farm where you see the tracks.) You can't outrun the Midgar Zolom without the chocobo, so you do need the chocobo for now. It'll just run off when you're across.

Then cross the swamp, go through the mines, and *then* level. The Midgar Zolom is awesome for leveling up and leveling limit breaks a bit later in the game. Put everyone on Hypers, have Aeris in your party (you especially want to get her Great Gospel before...well, soon, just in case you don't know... ^_^ ) because Aeris has healing limit breaks. Keep the Zolom alive. It will take out one of your fighers on the right or left, but you can still win the battle. Also, if you have Enemy Skill Materia, you can learn the awesome "Beta" skill.
