Uh, well, physical scars and tatoos can symbolise something in the past that is still with a character today, something dark or regretful. If those symbolic marks disapear you could say it's a sign the stuff from the past has been resolved or left behind and a new life/love can begin.

I wouldn't call that lookist, it's symbolism. I think it's a bit cheap, myself.
