Today isn't passing the bill per-se. Today is about invoking cloture on the S.1300 bill, meaning people can't fillibuster it anymore (a main defensive tactic in the senate). This takes 60 senate votes, tough when neither party has 60 senators in the chamber.

An up/down vote on S.1300 would be shortly forthcoming after cloture. However, after that point, S.1300 goes to conference with HR.2881 (the sister bill that the House passed back in September).

They will probably duke it out in conference for some weeks to hash out the differences between the two bills, of which there are a few significant points.

After the bills (hopefully) come out of conference, then there will be an up/down vote, where the final version of the bill needs a simple majority to pass. Assuming it passes, then it goes to our great Anti-Union President.

Assuming the miracle of miracle happens and we get all of our stuff through and signed by El Presidente, even then, we will still have to wait for the FAA to be dragged, kicking and screaming, by arbitrators and/or courts in to re-negotiate with the controllers.

Even though this is a move in the right direction, don't expect this to change anything quickly.
