you don;'t have to remove the engine or even losen it - had to replace manifold boots on my old bug, and gasket replacing part of that procedure. its too hard to explain here, but can be done with engine insitu with some wiggling and waggling.

books say remove engine cos its simpler to explain it on paper that way.
