Joe I had a simular problem. Mine would act like it was going to jump out of 3rd gear but then would jerk a couple of times and settle in to gear. I ended up changing out the shifting drum assy, dogs and the transmission as I had another engine. I'm not sure what the problem was but I think it was the pawl that rotates the shifting drum was worn. The dogs did also look a little worn so I'll never really know but it's working better than it ever has. As Doug suggested I'd give Carl Leo a shout as he is the one who sent me in the right direction......Gator Mike
