Subject: FC 's message, "John Sexton, Pres of NYU, to deliver keynote address at FU commencement, May 21st. BA, MA, PhD Fordham, JD Harvard"
In reply to: SIram 's message, "I understand the disappointment of some Seniors at the lack of name recognition of John Sexton as Commencement speaker. However though he might not have the high public profile of an entertainment figure like Bill Cosby he is no less accomplished, having risen to a place of prominence in the academic world. I can see why honoring the President of NYU, a rival of Fordham could upset some Seniors but let’s not forget that his three degrees from Fordham show what an alumnus can achieve and without that connection I doubt we’d even consider having him speak. It is customary to honor high profile graduates and if he were President of Stanford instead of NYU I doubt anyone would complain." on Sat April 23, 2005 13:24:07

I think Mr. Sexton's affiliation is the real problem here. Alumni need to understand that as Fordham becomes more competitive, more and more of the student base, especially those in the business school, either made the decision to attend Fordham over NYU or had it made for them either by not being accepted or by not receiving aid from NYU. If I wanted to listen to the President of NYU speak, I would have attended NYU. If I were working at any big firm in Corporate America and my firm was bringing in a speaker to motivate graduates of a managment training program or any such program within the firm, most people would have no problem with a speaker from a successful, non-competing corporation. But do you think Citibank would bring in a speaker from JPMorgan or UBS, even if that speaker used to work at Citibank? It makes no sense because that firm is a direct competitor, just as Fordham and NYU directly compete each year. It's enough that as our graduates head out into the "real world" some of our NYU counterparts can one-up us by placing into more selective employment programs, but do we really need to let them one-up us again by letting their president run our graduation ceremony?
