I can't get out much due to illness, but I was finally able to take the jaunt. I live in the FLORIDA PANHANDLE, about 40 miles north of Fort Walton Beach. On my way down the 5 mile stretch to the store, I saw LINES of people trying to get gas, which of course has gone up to $3+ a gallon in the wake of this disaster (RIDICULOUS). At Walmart itself it was crazy. There were more people there then I have ever seen in my life, and for once everything you could imagine was stocked. The surprised look on my face brought over a person asking me what I was surprised. They said "dont you live around here"? And I said "yes". She said "there have been people coming in from Louisiana in droves" She said "last night they were actually camping out in the parking lot of Walmart, and were sitting on lawn chairs". I couldn't believe my eyes or my ears! I was like "they came all the way here?" Then I realized we are only about 6 to 8 hours from the disasters hardest hit areas, so why not. I too took out cash while at Walmart. I didn't have much due to my own husband being out of work due to a recent operation, but nonetheless I knew someone needed it more. I then went looking for the down trodden in the parking lot to hand out some cash. I could not find anyone! BUT, I could sense they were there, somewhere. Noticing I only had less then a quarter of a tank of gas myself, with probably no way to get my tank filled now, I came back home frustrated and told my husband so and about the people. He told me they have to lay low and NOT be seen, or they will be arrested for loitering and possibly have their children taken from them for being homeless and not able to provide. I WAS STUNNED BY THAT! So, now, as a Pageant Director, I decided to take that littel bit of cash I have and put it to the greater efforts. I am challenging all Pageant Queens, online and live pageant Queens, to help in the relief efforts. The winner will receive a 37" trophy. I am also offering another 37" trophy to one of my own delegates who does the most advertising of the contest. Ribbons will be given to all participants. I feel that my few dollars may have helped a couple of people here and there, but if I can motivate MANY in the Pageant Community to go out and help, then the few dollars will go a much longer way. I am also challenging all Pageant Directors to come up with similar contests. I hope it works! Pageant Queens are not just pretty faces, but for the most part stand for platforms and Community Service. NOW this is their chance [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
