Subject: Piano

"Piano"
I played the piano in a dream one night
I knew each and every note just right
and the sound was loud and sweet
it was wild and new and still in a shade
of awareness blue just like you know that the November
rose is doomed to die very soon,
I do not play the piano in real life, but I do write
and I do make songs and music but I do
not know the piano, so,
I wroke up sorry
that I could only play the black and white keys
in a Jasmine-time dream.
O what an odd heady purfume
from that a sleepy bloom in my bedroom
it was strange to wake up
and not to know the piano
I almost cried tears.
when in my dream
I played the piano like Beethoven might
do I have perfect trust that when I lay me down to
sleep again the piano keys will once again
open up to my knowing hands.
Shall I compose a prayer for the dead
the boys who never did come home from Vietnam
shall
I know just enough pain to make a invisible whole
in my heart yeah that night vision pierced me so hard
and long that my fingers become numb and bloody
from its sad song.
