Hi there,
Over the last week I have set up a new site at www.canarianexchange.com. The site is mainly aimed at people within the Canary Islands who have stuff they want to sell. The site is basically an EBay for the Canaries where you can list your items either as an auction, or using a set price with the 'Buy it Now' feature. It's what I describe as an online car boot sale for the Canaries.
As you may well appreciate, a site of this type only benefits people if there are a lot of visitors both buying and selling, as there's no point listing your stuff if no one's going to buy it and no point having a look if there's nothing to buy... As the site is in it's infancy, there are currently only a few listings, so in order to encourage people to list their items, I've made it FREE to register and FREE to list your stuff. You can upload 1 image with your listing for FREE, however you will be charged if you want to upload more images (up to 4) in order to help with my hosting charges, as pictures take up more room on my server. There is also a small charge if you want to have a listing that is featured on the Homepage or at the Top of your particular category.... etc. This is because you are requesting preferential advertising. Full pricing information if you want special listings is available on the FAQ page. Any charges are minimal and are only taken for the upkeep of the site - the majority of listings can be made completely free of charge.
I'm hoping that the site will work well for everybody. It is supposed to be a service for all the Canaries, not a profit-making enterprise. If you have a shop in the Canaries, you can list your stock online, thus reaching the whole 7 islands (and even the rest of the world) rather than just your passing trade. If you need to sell your wares... private sellers can get rid of unwanted items, people could also sell their houses, cars or businesses privately.... so people without the funds to advertise their stuff on the web normally have this portal - plus the property would be advertised worldwide. Apartment rentals could also be advertised privately, as each apartment could be listed for a week block. If someone in the UK or anywhere else for that matter, wanted to rent it for one or two weeks, they can buy it for the one week or buy two consecutive weeks.... other sites charge up to 300 euros a year to list rental properties with no guarantee of tenants! Same with flights.... in fact the possibilities are endless.
The idea came to me because I have a child who is now one and although I am pregnant with another and need all my stuff again for the next child, I have lots of friends who also have a grown up child and other friends who are expecting new babies - some of them have things they no longer need, whereas others need to get all the equipment before their child arrives - the site would be excellent for this purpose. Also, I have used the UK EBay site to buy lots of items for myself, my baby and my house and because of the postal system from the UK to the Canaries, lots of items (at least 30%) have not arrived. With a more local service this is much less likely to happen, plus you can always pick up or drop off items from people nearby and take cash on delivery.
Anyway, that's my idea of what the site can do for all us residents and visitors alike. I would appreciate it if you would visit the site and list stuff you want to sell. I would also be grateful of a listing in your small ads section of the Santiago Monthly in order to make it a truly beneficial service for all. Failing that, just tell your friends about it. I need to get the word around and until I can muster up a bit of an advertising budget, this is the best way I can think of - word of mouth!
Thanks for your time for reading this and I hope the site can be of help to you.
