Subject: Identify WWII marine plane squadron patch and jacket

I would like some help identifying a marine pilot squadron patch and if the jacket it is painted on authentic before I pass it on to a young maring pilot who currently flys Hornets.

Thirty years ago I found this painted (I have pictures) Marine pilot jacket in Carlisle PA being sold by a French gentleman that was selling war posters. He said it he was selling it for the widow of C.R. Crawford which is the name on the pilot patch. He said that the pilot flew Corsairs during the war. It fit so I bought it but after awaile I felt strange wearing a military jacket with another man's name on it. so it has been in my closet for 30 years.

The jacket has a what I believe is the Tiawan flag on the back, a painted patch on the left shoulder with the word Guadalcanal on a red nuber one on a blue background with 5 stars. The squadron patch is a boxing bird of some sort with a red Fezz type hat , green pants. and one red, one white, and one blue feather on his butt, all on a light skyblue background.

A few years back I tried to find the family so I could give it to them but after checking with many marine squadron websites I came up empty.

This past week I met a young marine pilot who flys hornets for the 192 squadron and I believe he should have it. I decided to determine if this jacket was authentic and contacted some people who sell WWII jackets on EBay.

One gentleman I sent pictures to said he believes that the jacket was not made in WWII because it has a brown liner and USN punched on the windflap showning that this was a G1 jacket made after 1947.

In addition it has no maker's tag, the pilot patch is on the right breast rather then on the left breast from most of the pictures I have seen on the web, and it has a Scoville locking type zipper instead of a Talon.

The cuffs and waistband are wool since it unfortunately now has some moth damage.

I do not wish to pass on a fake and I am also curious that even if it is a fake are the painted patches based upon any real squadron.

Thanks for your help
