According to Maurer's WWII Combat Squadrons of the USAAF the patch you describe is the one approved in 1957 i.e not W.W.II vintage. The one image I have of the W.W.II 509th FBS patch (from one of the Jon Maguire flight jacket books), shows: a shield shaped patch, background red, outlined in black, overlaying a yellow V and a green aerial bomb, the upper half of a skeleton, faces left holding a .50 calibre machine gun.
