I have written one book that looks at the Disney Studios involvement in WW II. Please visit www.toonsatwar.com for more info. The book looks at Disney’s contributions on the home front, the training and propaganda films produced at the Studio, Gremlins, and a chapter on insignia.

I have recently started to write a second book – this book (or series of books) will look exclusively at WW II insignia designed by Disney artists and will be a more in-depth look at this fascinating area.

I have broken Disney insignia into three categories:

1) designs created by Disney artists and sanctioned by the Studio
2) designs using Disney characters created by men in the field without Disney’s knowledge or consent
3) Disney characters painted on the fuselages of planes before they left the Lockheed-Vega plant in Burbank

In category one it is estimated that Walt’s artists created some 1,100 insignia designs. I have managed to identify over 900 of these. I know the month and year the design was created, the name of the unit that requested the design, and I have a basic description of what the design looked like. I have managed to locate over 400 images for the designs I have identified. I am in the process of trying to identify the missing designs, locate missing images, and I have recently begun compiling brief background info on the units that had these insignia.

In category number two I have identified approximately 75 designs created by men in the field. These are mostly found on fighters and bombers.

In category number three I have some great background information and have managed to locate some two dozen pictures.

Disney Dons Dogtags is about the only book that has been published to date that looks at Disney insignia. While this book is a good reference, my tome will encompass much more. I hope to have the book finished by the end of the year.

If anyone has photos or information they want to share, I will make sure you are given credit on the acknowledgement page, and depending on the assistance, would be willing to offer a free copy of the book or at least one at cost.

Feel free to email me, or send a letter to:

If anyone has a design they think is Disney and want identified, feel free to drop me a line. Please email me before sending images as I have a different email account for photos to be sent to.

Thanks!
