SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! That is a dangerous post for us to even reply to, like kicking a rabid dog. You don't have to name names, we can call it 'legion'.
Maybe if we all throw out every recording we have, burn the archive, disconnect our brains, sell our souls to capricious conformity, blot the planet of all orchestras, and play 8-6-71 on continuous loop for all eternity we will be saved. I think I would rather be damned, though.
As a matter of pure opinion 8-6-71 is, like just about everything from '71, as fine a performance as the Grateful Dead ever mustered and a great show to check out. Hell, they almost sound as good as DSO! (hehehe, now I am really asking for it).
But my personal favorite from '71 is 12-5-71 at MSG's Felt Forum, the Jack Straw and Mr. Charlie in particular. The Straw begins with Phil asking : "Is somebody smoking coconuts out there?"
The answer, Phil, is YES!!!
Ditto on the good audience recordings. You have to love the unique roar the Grateful Dead got from an audience, which is missing from the SBDs. I had not heard that roar in years, until seeing DSO. They evoke that same roar, as loud and as deep no matter how small the venue!
