Amen to that, J Dub. Your Phish reference is dead-on (excuse the pun) and goes to what I said about the band/venue making the difference, not coast or geography. Sorry to the Phish fans out there, but I saw Phish from '93 on and was hugely turned off by what their audience developed into, especially at the bitter end.

As wacko and unleashed as Dead audiences were, I found a vibe in Phish's later years that can only be described as total self-absorption, but without even being mildly interesting......just a mute surliness 'all about me' kinda deal. (Dead crowds were nothing, if not fascinating to watch and were only oppressive at times because they were so out-of-control, not because they were giving off the kind of shitty attitude I saw rampant with Phish, really).

Until DSO came around in my life, I have to say I spent much time seeing Widespread Panic and they absolutely have THE BEST AUDIENCE AROUND, ANYWHERE THEY PLAY, ANY PLACE THEY PLAY. I made so many friends amongst strangers and never felt such kinship amongst 1000's of people. I can't speak too much to how it is now, since Houser's death, though recent shows I have seen have been just as fun as ever. The WSP crowd, for me, perfectly combined love of the music and responsibly crazy good times.....something the band and their music mirror perfectly.

The highest compliment I have been able to pay DSO when talking to fellow Panic fans is that the DSO audience really has the same essential vibe and, if *knock wood* the band keeps playing on, DSO will soon have a larger and larger nationwide family of good people they can always count on to show up AND take care of each other.

But this will only happen if we make it happen. Those of us lucky enough to have seen the Dead 'back in the day' (a relative term considering, for example, that DSO manager Norman first saw them in '69!!) have a responsibility to help DSO's 'tour' or audience 'scene' to develop in the right direction. I, for one, am more than willing to try to pull a pushy/space-hogging audience member 'aside' to quietly suggest they be more kind and less selfish. We can't just assume they know better.....

If rude people persist and make it a hard time for others, then I am just as willing to make my point more strenuously. I think we all know what bad behavior is at a show and it never hurts to nip it in the bud, either with kindness or a gentle kick in the pants. If we don't do this now, as DSO's audiences grow larger, we will surely face what the Dead's audience did, post-1985 and on. By no means do I mean we need 'audience policing' or some sort of 'politically correct' code of conduct (which is the exact opposite of what this is about). But we should not let rudeness or selfishness go unchecked, by just submitting or, WORSE, up and leaving (I am so sorry the guy above had to miss most of a show because of overcrowding). We all know what rudeness is and we all know that no one has any more right to see this band than the rest of us.....but I think that many people feel such a sense of empowerment and fulfillment through the music that it can lead to greedy disregard for the fact that it is here for all of us, not just each one of us.

IF I didn't say it before, you all are the BEST and are a huge part of why I love this band and am willing to go to great lengths to join you in seeing them. I can't wait for the next show!!! Peace.

>Yeah, EXACTLY...like the Fraze in Kettering, OH or
>Springfield, DSO should play at these places at least
>10 times a year, heeheehee!!! And all I gotta say is,
>has anyone ever spent time with Phish? Damn, we got
>it good!
