EQUINE FLU INVADES THE RACETRACK

Just as the pointy end of the season arrives, disaster hit The Cartoons, with a serious flu like sickness sweeping through the club in the lead up to this weeks crucial match. With Mutleys' men unable to train for most of the week, just being competitive would be a challenge.

With the game once again played at The Groovers home ground, the nightclub like atmosphere before the game was apparent, with long queues at the entry gates, dancefloors at both ends of the ground and drink prices high enough to clear the foreign debt of many 3rd world countries.

The Groovers took to the field first, and appeared to settle into the tempo of the game early with two quick goals to key forward Neitz. This was followed by another one to recalled forward O'loughlin, and it was an early lead to the Groovers. Two late goals to the Cartoons from Tarrant and Mooney, and at quarter time it was the Party Animals by only 8 points.

QUARTER TIME
Party Animals 3 2 (20) lead Wakky Races 2 0 (12)

Whatever Molly said to his men at the first break, clearly worked, and for the second week in a row key forward Quinten Lynch actually got his glove on the ball and kicked truly. He was ably assisted by key midfielder Mitchell, and together they assisted the Groovers in piling on 11 goals for the quarter. Had it not been for the efforts of Chad Cornes, this game would have been over at half time. As it was, The Cartoons were down by more than 6 at the long break, with a huge job in front of them.

HALF TIME
Party Animals 14 4 (88) lead Wakky Races 8 4 (52)

After the half time entertainment of Irene Cara miming her beer commercial 70's classic was cleared away. The Cartoons were clearly not done for in this game. However as hard as they tried to get back into the game, Molly's men appeared to have all the answers. In a quarter that went goal for goal, The Groovers managed to increase their lead by 2 points.

Late in the quarter the Groovers suffered two key injuries, with both Neitz and O'Loughlin going down with what appear to be season ending injuries.

3/4 TIME
Party Animals 23 10 (148) lead Wakky Races 17 8 (110)

With The Groovers down to 6 men, The Cartoons struck. Led by Captain Jeff White, who began to dominate at the clearances, they piled on the goals, and the floundering Groovers appeared to have no answers. With the game in the balance, a left foot snap by Cassissi put the Races within striking distance with minutes to go. In the dying seconds, a desperate tackle and resultant goal from Luke Ball sealed the deal, and it was The Groovers by 9 points.

So its a rematch of the Qualifying final with the Groovers to meet the Gunners, and coach Mutley is left to ponder a spring without a carnival.
