GUNNERS AND ANIMALS PUT ON A SHOW FOR THE AGES

With the parades and pre match "entertainment " dispensed with, the buzz around the ground was would this be a game remembered for all the wrong reasons? With both sides hit by injuries to key players, there was genuine concern that we would be about to witness a fizzer, particularly after The Animals were dealt a cruel blow with the late withdrawal of Luke Ball.

The fears of a fizzer were quickly put to rest as The Party boys got the jump on their more fancied rivals. Former SwanGunner Michael O'Loughlin was particularly damaging during the quarter slamming on 4 goals. No matter what moves Horse made from the coaches box, he could not contain his effectiveness, and whoever it was from the Gunners organisation that suggested theat Micky O should be delisted must have been looking for somewhere to hide.

At quarter time it was the Party animals by 21 points

QUARTER TIME
Party Animals 5 0 (30) lead SwanGunners 1 4 (10)

Horse appeared a picture of serenity during the break, calmly addressing each player individually. You would never have known that his team was 21 points down and playing like shit. Whatever the message he gave them, it worked. The Gunners came back firing during the second quarter with stand in captain Matthew Pavlich dominant. They piled on 8 goals for the quarter, to take the lead at half time. Accurate kicking by The Animals had kept them in the game, and at half time it was The Gunners by 10 points.

HALF TIME
SwanGunners 9 10 (64) lead Party Animals 9 0 (54)

With the half time sprint run and won by some hack from a tanking club, the scene was set for a fitting climax to the season.

Molly hade made changes to the lineup, in the hope of recapturing the first quarter form. The third quarter was perhaps the best quarter of football seen all year in the RFL. Both sides attacked the footy with a ferocity unseen before. Scotland was a star for the Animals, kicking his 6th goal for the game during the quarter, and assisting in many others. The Gunners countered with goals to Cross and Harvey, and at three quarter time we officially had the close one that everyone so much wanted to see. The Gunners held the lead by a mere 1 point.

3/4 TIME
SwanGunners 16 14 (110) lead Party Animals 17 7 (109)

In a hard physical match there are always questions about which side can hold out and after a 3rd quarter that had just seen some of the most physical contests all year this was going to be a battle of the fittest.

Animals big man and 2 time premiership player Peter Everitt led the way for the party boys with 2 quick goals and it looked like being a Hot August Night at the Disco, as the Animals jumped to an 11 point lead early in the last. Two goals to the Gunners courtesy of Rantlow runner up James McDonald had the lead back in the hands of the Gunners and with 10 minutes to play it was a case of last man standing. Unfortunately for the Animals they were shot, as the Gunners fired their last round for the season. The game had taken its toll on their players, and two late goals to Gunners ruckman Hudson saw the lead out to 17 points as the siren sounded, announcing the SwanGunners as RFL premiers for 2007.
