Subject: Armein Kirkland update

After his team missed a whopping 14 free throws Friday night, Robert E. Lee head coach Larry Jones was forced to deal with another maddening loss.

John Tyler went through an equally maddening first half of free-throw inaccuracy, until making 14-of-16 from the line in the second half for a 58-51 victory over Lee before an estimated 2,000 fans at the Lions Den.

JT, 17-9 overall and 4-1 in District 12-5A, is now tied for first with Lufkin (16-8, 4-1). The Panthers defeated Longview, 62-53, dropping the Lobos to 3-2.

The Red Raiders (15-11) are in trouble at 1-4, with still another half of district basketball remaining. Three of Lee's losses in 12-5A are by a combined 15 points.

The Red Raiders shot only 46 percent from the free-throw line, at 12-of-26, while the Lions cashed in on 22-of-33 (67 percent) opportunities.

"You can't play a team the caliber of John Tyler and go 12-for-26 from the free-throw line," Jones said. "They are too good defensively and too good offensively.

"I'm proud of our kids. We gave them everything we had and we had our opportunities."

Lee senior Armein Kirkland, who delivered 24 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, got an assist on Luke Jasper's inside bucket that made it a two-point game.

JT's Phillip Nauls then missed a 3-pointer, and Kirkland drew a foul on the rebound. Kirkland, though, missed both foul shots.

After a series of turnovers and the score holding at 50-48, Lee's Ty Wright missed a 3-pointer with about one minute to play.

JT's Albert Logan, a 6-7 senior, pulled down the rebound and JT senior point guard DeMarcus Bailey capped the possession with a pair of free throws to put the Lions up 52-48.

Lee threw the ball away on the ensuing possession, and Johnson stepped up again and drilled a jumper to make it a six-point game with 37 seconds left.

The Red Raiders weren't done, however, as Kirkland drilled a 21-footer to bring his team within three, 54-51, with 28 seconds showing.

JT stayed composed, however, and Bailey took the inbounds pass and dribbled quickly up the court before dishing to Logan cutting to the basket for an easy layup and a 56-51 lead.

The game was over after Kirkland heaved up a long 3-point attempt that missed with about 10 seconds remaining.

Kirkland was the only Lee player in double figures. Jasper had seven points and 6-5 senior post Ross Barber contributed six points and six rebounds.

The Red Raiders struggled with their shooting throughout the game, finishing 18-of-60 (30 percent) from the field.

The Lions went 16-of-43 (37 percent) from the field. JT continued to be plagued by turnovers, with 21 against Lee, while the Red Raiders had 14 turnovers.

JT led 26-22 at halftime, but Lee rallied for its first lead since early in the game when Jasper buried a 3-pointer off a Kirkland pass to put the Red Raiders up 30-29.
